You
are strongly advised to take out travel insurance
before you visit the States, as there is no NHS in
the country and medical care is prohibitively expensive.
Make sure that your insurance covers you if you intend
to indulge in sporting activities - water sports,
climbing, skiing etc. - and DON'T skimp if you are
asked to pay an extra premium.
Note, however, that most insurers work on the basis
that you will be required to pay for any on-the-spot
medical treatment in the US and will only be reimbursed
on your return home.
If you suffer loss or theft, make sure that you contact
the local police so that they can complete an official
report for presentation to your insurance company.
